Keep an eye out in your community for the next certification classes in your area. You may become one more very valuable person in your neighborhood when (not if) a disaster hits your town.

The Mill Creek Canyon CERT program, sponsored by VFCCi and affiliated with San Bernardino County Fire Department OES, Department of Homeland Secuity, and FEMA, focuses on basic response training and disaster preparedness for all citizens of Forest Falls and Mountain Home Village. The training offered is open and available to residents of neighboring communities as well, and as they complete training those residents then plug into their own communities CERT programs.

This Community Emergency Response Team trains residents on Disaster Preparedness, such as Home Evacuation Plans, Shelter-in-Place kits, and Response backpacks. The training includes hands-on Fire Suppression knowledge with actual fire extinguisher practice. The 21 hour training covers basic disaster medical and triage strategies as well as disaster psychology and light search and rescue techniques.

Graduates from the basic training can opt to register with the state as Disaster Service Workers (DSWs) and be available to assist first responders in disasters when activated by official authorities. Team members maintain local disaster supply bins, Emergency Alert Communications equipment and distribute informational literature on public safety, fire resistance strategies, and disaster preparedness awareness.

In Aug 2014, MCC CERT was activated after mudslides cut off the town in order to assist residents and visitors who were trapped in town.  Big Falls Lodge housed many people that night.

Keep an eye out in your community for the next certification classes in your area. You may become one more very valuable person in your neighborhood when (not if) a disaster hits your town.

A lot of us shop on Amazon.  Please consider using this link to complete your purchases, it directly benefits VFCCi.  You don’t do anything different, but at the end of each quarter VFCCi receives a .5% of your purchases as a donation from Amazon for our 501(c) 3.

Half a percent doesn’t seem like much, but if everyone uses it – it adds up.  It’s a painless way to donate to our community center.
